World Breastfeeding Week, 1-7 August 2007

24 July 2007

In support of global efforts to promote breastfeeding, the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre has prepared a package of communications materials, available for immediate download from this site in several languages.

Each year from 1-7 August, World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated in more than 120 countries by UNICEF and its partners, including the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action and the World Health Organization.

A key component of the package is a publication celebrating the 15th Anniversary of the Innocenti Declaration on the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding. The 2005 Declaration on Infant and Young Child feeding reaffirms the importance of promoting breastfeeding in accomplishment of the Millennium Development Goals, and has been endorsed by the UN Standing Committee on Nutrition and welcomed by the World Health Assembly.

This year’s theme of World Breastfeeding Week is breastfeeding within one hour of birth. This has proven to prevent a significant number of neonatal deaths in developing countries. Early initiation should be coupled with exclusive breastfeeding to the age of six months which can prevent the deaths of 1.3 million children under age five each year.

This communications package can help programme officers, health professionals, nutrition specialists, non-governmental organizations, Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative partners and others in their advocacy efforts around breastfeeding.
