Where is FGM/C practiced?

The majority of girls and women at risk of undergoing FGM/C are living in 28 countries in Africa and the Middle East. In Africa, these countries form a broad band from Senegal in the west to Somalia in the east.

It is estimated that between 100 and 140 million women and girls in the world have undergone some form of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). In recent years some 3 million girls and women have been cut annually on the African continent (Sub-Saharan / Africa, Egypt and Sudan).
