Relationship between screen time and dry eye symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic in the pediatric population of the Western region of Saudi Arabia

This research aimed to measure the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) and study the relationship between screen time and dry eye symptoms in the pediatric population during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire. This descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study included the pediatric population, ages 1 to 18 years, of both genders, who attended outpatient clinics of two main hospitals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Collected data included age, gender, dry eye symptoms, and common DED risk factors, followed by the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, which consists of 12 items graded on a five-point scale (0 = never to 4 = all the time).

Initial evaluation practices to identify young children with delays and disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic

This study utilized a mixed methods design to analyze responses from a nationally distributed survey of professionals’ (N = 1,000) experiences conducting initial evaluations for early intervention and preschool special education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most personnel reported pausing their initial evaluations at some point during the pandemic. Professionals conducting initial evaluations reported various changes to their prepandemic initial evaluation process, including moving the evaluation to a remote format and asking about the impact of the pandemic on the family. Changes to the initial evaluation process were more often reported by personnel conducting initial evaluations for early intervention when compared with personnel conducting initial evaluations for preschool special education.
Self-regulated learning, online mathematics learning engagement, and perceived academic control among Chinese junior high school students during the COVID-19 pandemic: a latent profile analysis and mediation analysis

Under the COVID-19 prevention and control policy, online learning has been widely used. The current study aimed to identify latent profiles of self-regulated learning in the context of online mathematics learning during the recurrent outbreak of COVID-19, and examine the mechanisms underlying the relationship between self-regulated learning and online mathematics learning engagement among Chinese junior high school students using variable-and person-centered approaches. A sample of 428 Chinese junior high school students (47.66% female) completed questionnaires on self-regulated learning, perceived academic control, and learning engagement. Mplus7.0 was used to analyze the latent classes of self-regulated learning. A mediation model was conducted using the software SPSS PROCESS macro.

Learning behavior towards modular instruction, sex, and academic performance in English of Grade 7 public high school students

Learning behavior is accounted to be pivotal to academic success. During the pandemic, concerns about students’ learning behavior toward Printed Modular Distance Learning (PMDL) modality were put to consideration. Thus, using descriptive-correlational analysis, this study examined the extent of learning behavior (LB) in English PMDL of 242 Grade 7 students in a district in Northern Negros. The level of English academic performance was identified and correlated with the extent of LB. For data collection, an English test and a contextualized LB Scale were given. Using percentage, weighted mean, Mann-Whitney U test, and Spearman rank correlation, the results yielded a high extent of LB toward English PMDL and an average level of academic performance as a whole and by sex. The difference in the extent of Attention-Persistence behavior was insignificant in terms of sex while females’ extent of Competence-Motivation, Attitude toward Learning, and Strategy/Flexibility were significantly higher than males. The level of English academic performance was also insignificant according to sex. Lastly, no correlation was found between learners’ extent of LB in PMDL and the level of English academic performance. Although learners still fell short in achieving higher academic performance in consideration of stronger interplaying factors, the findings still shed light on the learners’ status during pandemic where positive behaviors were displayed. The findings may serve as basis to revisit the PMDL implementation, and craft contextualized English 7 materials and enhancement programs to fill the language gaps of learners during the school year.

Parental perception of distance learning and homeschooling during COVID-19 pandemic: an empirical analysis in Sri Lanka

Many countries around the world were compelled to adhere to rigorous practices of school closures due to the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). During the lockdown period, distance teaching and learning have become the only form to keep students on track. Reports have revealed that during this period, parents and students have strived hard to cope up with the learning method, which is new to the school education system in Sri Lanka. Against this background, this study explored the perceptions of parents in distance learning and homeschooling of their children during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka. In addition, this study also attempted to assess the success of such educational practices in the country during the pandemic. A quantitative research approach was used, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed via Google Forms to a sample of 587 respondents through snowball sampling across Sri Lanka.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in school closures worldwide and unexcused absences have increased since schools reopened. Drawing on multiple stakeholders' perspectives, this study aimed to (i) develop a detailed understanding of how school attendance problems (SAPs) have manifested for primary school-aged children in the context of COVID-19; and (ii) identify promising community-based intervention strategies.

Classroom language during COVID-19: Associations between mask-wearing and objectively measured teacher and preschooler vocalizations

During the COVID-19 pandemic, mask-wearing in classrooms has become commonplace. However, there are little data on the effect of face-masks on children’s language input and production in educational contexts, like preschool classrooms which over half of United States children attend. Leveraging repeated objective measurements, this study longitudinally examined child and teacher speech-related vocalizations in two cohorts of 3.5–4.5-year-old children enrolled in the same oral language classroom that included children with and without hearing loss.
School well-being relationships with achievement motivation in primary school: a study of positive psychology in pandemic

This  study  aims  to  determine  the  existence  of  a  positive  and  significant  relationship between  school  well-being  and  achievement  motivation  of  fifth  grade. Primary school students. This  type  of  research  is  correlational  quantitative  with  Likert  scale  data collection   techniques,   thats   the school well-being scale of 19   items and the achievement  motivation  scale  of  22  items.  The  population  in  this  study were  2427 students  of  fifth  grade  public  elementary  school.  The  research  sample  used  simple random  sampling  with  a  total of  336  students.


Exploring perception of the latest Covid-19 official educational measures amongst Algerian secondary school teachers

Taking novel and less killing identities, Covid-19 has created havoc in education systems worldwide and Algeria was no exception. The Algerian authorities and education policymakers consequently found themselves obliged to take measures necessary to adapt schooling and learning environments to this health crisis. Hence, this study aimed to unravel secondary school teachers’ perceptions of the adopted Covid-19 educational measures so as to 1) explore the changes they brought about into the learning environment and 2) investigate their effects on the learning process. To this end, exploratory research was conducted, opting for a mixed-method approach using document analysis and a questionnaire to which 140 teachers responded.
Learning loss in Cambodia and the use of EdTech during COVID-19

This report estimates the effects of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on learning and earnings in Cambodia, analyzes the country’s EdTech readiness and the extent to which EdTech access and use are correlated with learning, and discusses the policy implications of the study findings for enhancing learning and for improving system resilience through EdTech based teaching and learning. More specifically, it first analyzes the state of learning outcomes in Cambodia in the immediate post-COVID period (November 2021) using the government’s national learning assessment (NLA) data for grade six students and estimates the declines in learning outcomes experienced by students in this grade between 2016 and 2021 in Khmer and mathematics. Additionally, using a learning loss simulation model developed at the World Bank, it also estimates losses in learning adjusted years of schooling (LAYS) and future earnings of students resulting from pandemic. Second, it analyzes the relationship between the EdTech based distance learning measures implemented at the school level and learning outcomes, as well as the extent to which the country is prepared to systematically integrate and expand the use of EdTech in the education system. And third, it provides recommendations for enhancing learning recovery and learning outcomes, and for addressing gaps in policy provision and implementation to support the scaling up of EdTech for the purpose of improving system resilience.
The relationship between teachers' ICT abilities and parental guidance on student learning motivation during the Covid-19 pandemic in Batupapan

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between the teacher's ICT ability and parental tutoring on students' learning motivation at SDN Gugus Batupapan, Tana Toraja Regency. This research was conducted on teachers of highgrade students, namely grades 4.5 and 6 at SDN Gugus Batupapan. The population of high-class students at SDN Gugus Batupapan is 587 students. In this study, the Yamane or Slovin formula was used to determine the sample size for students, namely by using probability sampling technique with random sampling so that a total sample of 247 students was obtained. While the population of the number of teachers as many as 24 teachers. The method used in this study to see the causal relationship of an independent variable (X) to a certain variable (Y) is to use the ex-post facto research method with the type of correlation research. This study used two types of analysis, namely descriptive statistical analysis and inferential statistical analysis on SPSS 24. Based on the statistical analysis of the teacher's ICT ability variable, the highest score was 105.00 and the lowest score was 74.00. The results of the analysis show that the mean is 88.3333, the median is 89.000, the mode is 89.00 and the standard deviation is 8.41152. Analysis of the variable data on parenting tutoring data obtained the highest score of 108.00 and the lowest score of 55.00. 

Systematic review study on the impact of the pandemic on literacy: experiences of parents and teachers

With the COVID-19 pandemic, it was necessary to carry out public health measures, including the adoption of remote teaching and modification of the educational practices and experiences of parents and teachers. Thus, the objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review and analyze the impact of the pandemic on the learning of schoolchildren in the early years of literacy, according to the experiences and practices of parents and teachers. This systematic review is based on the PRISMA method (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) and the guiding questions of the PICO strategy (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome). The PubMed, LILACS, Scopus, SciELO, Embase, and Web of Science databases were used.
Investigation of correlation between Internet addiction and parent–child relationship in girls' adolescence in the COVID-19 pandemic

Today, the increasing process with the using internet is a kind of disease among adolescents, especially in the COVID-19 pandemic. The activities such as learning–educational process and online games will become one of the problems for families. This study aimed to determine the relationship between internet addiction and parent–child relationships in high school girls in Isfahan. This descriptive-correlational study was conducted in girls' high school in Isfahan, Iran. One hundred and sixty students and one of their parents had participated through cluster sampling method. They filled out the Young Internet Addiction Questionnaire and the Fine et al.'s Child-Parent Questionnaire (PCRS). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tests and Pearson correlation test. The significance level of the data was considered 0.05.
Problems of digital-based children's literature learning in pandemic times

Enforcement Digital-based distance learning is a form of Indonesian government policy during the Covid-19 pandemic so that learning can still run well. However, the reality is that based learning has found several obstacles from students and learning support facilities. This study aims to describe the use of media in children's literacy learning and to describe the condition of the internet network during learning experienced by PGSD students from PGRI Madiun University. The method used is descriptive qualitative, defining students' obstacles when learning digital-based children's literature.
The effect of gross model emotion regulation intervention on educational adaptation and health anxiety of adolescents with families affected by Covid-19

Among the negative consequences of the Covid-19 disease among adolescent family members is the creation of educational adjustment problems and health anxiety. Therefore,the present study was conducted with the aim of determining the effect of the Gross model emotion regulation intervention on educational adaptation and health anxiety of adolescents with families affected by Covid-19. The research was a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test and control groups and the statistical population included adolescents aged 13 to 18 years living in Naghadeh who had a person with Covid-19 in their family in 2021. The statistical sample size was 40 people (20 in the experimental group and 20 in the control group) from the statistical population who were selected by available sampling method and randomly placed in the control and experimental groups. For the experimental group, 8 sessions of 90-minute emotion regulation sessions based on the Gross model were performed and the control group did not receive any treatment. The data were collected using Sinha and Singh's (1993) Educational Adaptation Questionnaire and Salkoskis et al.'s (2002) Short Health Anxiety Questionnaire and were analyzed by multivariate analysis of covariance using SPSS version 26 software.

COVID-19 & Children: Rapid Research Response

UNICEF Innocenti is mobilizing a rapid research response in line with UNICEF’s global response to the COVID-19 crisis. The initiatives we’ve begun will provide the broad range of evidence needed to inform our work to scale up rapid assessment, develop urgent mitigating strategies in programming and advocacy, and preparation of interventions to respond to the medium and longer-term consequences of the COVID-19 crisis. The research projects cover a rapid review of evidence, education analysis, and social and economic policies.
