The negative impact of noise on adolescents’ executive function: an online study in the context of home-learning during a pandemic

UNICEF estimates that 1.6 billion children across the world have had their education impacted by COVID-19 and have attempted to continue their learning at home. With ample evidence showing a negative impact of noise on academic achievement within schools, the current pre-registered study set out to determine what aspects of the home environment might be affecting these students. Adolescents aged 11–18 took part online, with 129 adolescents included after passing a headphone screening task. They filled out a sociodemographic questionnaire, followed by a home environment and noise questionnaire. Participants then completed three executive function tasks (the Flanker, the Backward Digit Span, and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test) while listening to a soundtrack of either white noise or home-like environmental noise. For purposes of analysis, based on the noise questionnaire, participants were separated into quieter and noisier homes.
Passive tobacco smoke in children and young people during the COVID-19 pandemic

During the past year, COVID-19 has necessitated numerous lockdowns, including the closure of schools, causing children and young people to spend more time in their homes. For some children, whose family members smoke, more time at home has meant increased SHS and THS exposure, whereas the school and after-school environment are smoke-free. In addition, parents or other family members might be home working, and so where they would usually smoke away from their home, for example when they go to their workplace, they are now smoking at home. This study aimed to ascertain the changing habits of smoking or ex-smoking parents of children and young people with severe respiratory disease, identified from a tertiary paediatric respiratory clinic during the pandemic. 50 parents have been given an 11-point questionnaire (panel) to respond to over the telephone (January–February, 2021).

Social inequalities in health determinants in Spanish children during the COVID-19 lockdown

The COVID-19 lockdown was imposed in a context of notable inequalities in the distribution of the social determinants of health. It is possible that the housing conditions in which children and their families experienced the confinement, and the adoption of healthy behaviors, may have followed unequal patterns. The aim was to describe social inequalities in housing conditions and in health-related behaviors among children during the lockdown in Spain. This cross-sectional study was based on data from an online survey collecting information on the child population (3–12 years) living in Spain (n = 10,765).
Influence of the characteristics of the house and place of residence in the daily educational activities of children during the period of COVID-19’ confinement

The period of confinement motivated by the COVID-19 pandemic and established by the governments of different countries has influenced the lifestyle of millions of children, not being able to continue carrying out multiple educational activities as they did until confinement. The objective of this research was to determine and analyze whether the living conditions of children during the period of confinement caused by COVID-19 influenced their daily educational activities. A descriptive, comparative and cross-sectional quantitative study with a non-experimental design was carried out, with a single measurement in a single group. Factors associate with living conditions were analyzed, such as the place of residence and the type of house in which Spanish children have been confined, as well as the number and use of technological devices. The parents' perception of the children's state of fatigue, happiness, energy and tiredness was also analyzed.

COVID-19 & Children: Rapid Research Response

UNICEF Innocenti is mobilizing a rapid research response in line with UNICEF’s global response to the COVID-19 crisis. The initiatives we’ve begun will provide the broad range of evidence needed to inform our work to scale up rapid assessment, develop urgent mitigating strategies in programming and advocacy, and preparation of interventions to respond to the medium and longer-term consequences of the COVID-19 crisis. The research projects cover a rapid review of evidence, education analysis, and social and economic policies.
