Distance education & the digital divide: ensuring learning continuity for girls during school closures

This brief was developed to support the dissemination of key messages in Mind the Gap 2: Seeking Safe and Sustainable Solutions for Girls’ Education in Crises. It provides an overview of evidence and gaps in girls’ and women’s access to distance education and recommends actions for gender-responsive planning and design of distance education policies and interventions.


Effectiveness of techno-pedagogical skills of secondary school teachers on online teaching during Covid-19 pandemic

This study investigates the effectiveness of techno-pedagogical skills of secondary school teachers in their online teaching. A sample consists of 42 CBSE and ICSE secondary school teachers. The research adopts a descriptive survey design for collecting data using the “Techno-Pedagogical Skill Assessment Scale” developed by Sibichen (2011). Structured interviews also formed a part of data collection. The results reveal a moderately positive correlation between techno-pedagogical skills and effective online teaching. There is a significant difference between the high level and low level of techno-pedagogical skills of secondary school teachers with their effective online teaching. The positive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the techno-pedagogical skill of secondary school teachers is reported in the study.
Factors affecting the fear levels of secondary school students during the COVID-19 pandemic

This study aims to determine the factors affecting the fear levels of secondary school students during the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, a parallel design approach was used in the study. The quantitative data were collected using the ’Corona virus Fear Scale’. Results of the study show that the students’ fear of corona virus was moderate. Students expressed that the factors which increased their fear levels in per- centage terms are: an increase in the number of cases (26.24%), increase in the number of deaths (12.69%), death of family members (2.40%), death of close relatives (1.20%), fear of losing loved ones (0.86%), being COVID positive (6.52%), a family member being COVID positive (5.15%), people in immediate surroundings being COVID positive (5.15%), people’s insensitivity (7.20%), people not wearing masks (4.29% ) and people not following social distancing (2.40%). To reduce their fears during the COVID-19 pandemic, students stated that they took measures such as staying at home, wearing a mask, paying attention to hygiene, taking precautions, and maintaining social distance.
Swedish pupils' perspectives on emergency remote teaching during COVID-19: a qualitative study.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools in many countries were forced to stop face-to-face teaching and switch to emergency remote teaching (ERT). The aim of this study, based on semi-structured interviews with upper secondary-school pupils in Stockholm, was to explore how Swedish pupils perceive their ERT and to understand their preconditions for learning. We found variations among pupils with regard to how they perceived their new morning routine, the increased flexibility in structuring their day, the flexibility to choose their workplace at home, and the decreased control by their teachers. While some perceived the increased flexibility as challenging, others appraised it as a possibility to be more independent. With regard to their classmates, all participants perceived difficulties learning from each other in ERT. Identified difficulties involved comparing one's performance to that of classmates, having deep discussions, encouraging each other, and organizing themselves in a group.
Kindergarten practitioners' perspectives on intergenerational programs in Norwegian kindergartens during the COVID-19 pandemic: exploring transitions and transformations in institutional practices

Intergenerational programs have benefits for both children and older adults; however, the ongoing pandemic has changed social situations across the globe. The focus of this article is on exploring transitions and transformations due to societal conditions and demands that drive the implementation of intergenerational programs during a time of a global crisis that is the COVID-19 pandemic. Through an online survey form and focus group discussion, a total of 64 kindergarten practitioners shared their perspectives on intergenerational programs between young children and older adults in kindergartens in Norway. Kindergarten practitioners identified challenges that hinder intergenerational programs in kindergarten settings during the pandemic, as well as conditions that facilitate its implementation. Implications from this research indicate the need to think differently to be able to provide children with intergenerational experiences in kindergarten settings in Norway even during the pandemic and beyond.
Enhancing digital skills of early childhood teachers through online science, technology, engineering, art, math training programs in Estonia

Teacher professional development programs, including mid- and long-term Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math (STEAM) courses, have recently moved from in person learning at university premises to an online environment. Whether it is a temporary change in learning methods caused by the COVID-19 restrictions or whether it will become a new normal is currently under discussion in many teacher training institutions around the world. The aim of this study was to design and implement time- and money-saving synchronous online teacher training format for conducting co-design courses for early childhood teachers in the theme of STEAM integrated learning activities. Based on Tallinn University’s curriculum of in-person training courses on the same topic, with the volume of 40 contact hours, we delivered the content in two different formats: in 11-months (as it used to be in pre-COVID period) and in 4-months, adapted to participants’ needs.

Satisfaction of parents in the implementation of PdPR on special education during the Covid-19 pandemic

This study aims to identify the level of parental satisfaction in the implementation of Special education PdPR during the Covid-19 pandemic. The implementation of PdPR played a very important role in improving the quality of education during the Covid-19 pandemic. The design of this study used a quantitative method that used a questionnaire instrument distributed through Google Form. The questionnaire was divided into three parts, which is demographic information, the second part on the level of parental satisfaction and the third part on the barriers to the implementation of PdPR. A total of 50 respondents consisting of parents of primary school special education students were involved in this study. The study data obtained were analyzed descriptively in the form of frequency and percentage which were categorized into two parts, the analysis of parental satisfaction with PdPR learning and the barriers faced by parents to implement PdPR.
The challenges of secondary school administration during the pandemic of Covid-19: an overview of rural schools in Sabah, Malaysia

School administration is crucial to educational management because it entails the involvement, support, and cooperation of all members of an organization to achieve educational quality and objectives. Administrative efficiency is also vital to the development of an education institution. Schools in Malaysia were also impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. The purpose of this article is to discuss the issues and challenges facing secondary school administration during the Covid-19 pandemic. A questionnaire was distributed to rural schools in the district of Beluran, Sabah, to collect data. According to the study's findings, school administrators face four primary types of challenges, including 55% unstable internet access, 15% cost of home-based learning, 20% lack of parental cooperation, and 10% difficulty managing module delivery to rural students. Additionally, the researchers suggest several strategies for overcoming the difficulties faced by school administrators. The implications of this study provide fundamental knowledge and direction for researchers and practitioners seeking to continuously improve school administration management in accordance with new standards in line with the transformation of schools between 2021-2025.
Creative adolescent experiences of education and mental health during COVID‐19: a qualitative study

This qualitative study investigated creative adolescent perceptions of their educational and mental health experiences during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Participants were 25 English-speaking adolescents from the Midwest in the United States. They were identified as creative by their teachers according to known creative profiles. Participants attended an all-day creative career workshop in the Spring 2021 semester. The five focus groups guided by semi-structured interviews conducted for this study occurred during the workshop. This study was phenomenological in nature with constructivist and transformative paradigms, and transcripts were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis by the first, second, and third authors.
Global trends in the research on early childhood education during the COVID-19 pandemic: a bibliometric analysis

During the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and preschools worldwide have been suspended, causing many challenges for students, parents, and teachers. Through home-schooling, preschool children struggle to accept new (online) learning modes. Teachers need to acquire digital skills quickly to deliver online teaching, while parents need to take on the role of a tutor at home to facilitate their children’s learning. This study aims to gauge the global trends in the research on early childhood education (ECE) during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly considering the need for a swift response to the impact of the pandemic. It employed the bibliometric approach to studying ECE studies during the pandemic by identifying the countries of most-cited publications, most-cited categories of studies, and research methodologies used in the eligible studies (N = 507).
Prospective study on the attitude toward school of secondary school students in the post-pandemic period

This paper is aimed to study the attitude of secondary school students towards school. The research was conducted on a sample of 437 secondary school students and 42 teachers, who teach them. Students were given a questionnaire to identify their attitude towards school from five perspectives: students' self-perception from an academic point of view, students' attitude towards the school itself, attitude towards teachers, the importance they attach to goals, motivation, and self-regulation. Group interviews with teachers explored the relationship between teachers and students, how teachers relate to students, how they perceive students, how school assessments are done, how they provide feedback to students, as well as issues of improving students' attitudes towards school.
Effect of teacher autonomy support on the online self‐regulated learning of students during COVID-19 in China: The chain mediating effect of parental autonomy support and students' self-efficacy

Self-regulated learning (SRL) ability is the key determinant of the success of full-time online learning. Thus, exploring the influencing factors of SRL and their influencing mechanisms is necessary to improve this ability among K-12 students. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence mechanism of teacher autonomy support on students' online SRL by examining the structural relationship among teacher autonomy support, parental autonomy support, students' self-efficacy, and students' online SRL.

An exploratory study of the impact of COVID‐19 on foster parenting

As the COVID-19 virus began to spread in the United States of America, states' child welfare administrators and policymakers responded differently. Some states implemented more restrictive policies, some less or did not require many restrictions (i.e., stay at home orders or masking in public spaces). Video-based online focus groups with foster parents in four states utilized a consensual qualitative approach to identify themes relating to foster parenting during COVID-19 and understand how policies related to COVID-19 restrictions affected their caregiving decisions. Themes that emerged included pathways to foster parenting pre-pandemic, the impact of COVID-19 on both foster parents, children in care, and foster parents' ability to understand the broader importance of their caregiving. While participants in all of the states reported similar experiences relating to the need for resources and support and the challenge of managing both work and remote education for their children, those in states with restrictive policies were more likely to report pandemic-specific concerns including a lack of agency communication or case progress, the mental health toll on foster children in their care and their concerns about accepting new placements. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.
Analysis of vocational high school student metacognitive capabilities on geometry topics during the Covid-19 pandemic

This study aims to analyze students' metacognitive abilities in terms of metacognitive awareness inventory on geometry topics during the Covid-19 pandemic. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method. The research was conducted at Vocational High School Swadaya Karangnunggal Indonesia in the 2020/2021 academic year. The population in this study was the eleventh-grade student of office automation and governance, totaling 24 students. The questionnaire consists of 35 statement items with five indicators, namely planning (7 items), strategies for managing information (10 items), monitoring of understanding (7 items), improvement strategy (5 items), and evaluation (6 items).

COVID-19 & Children: Rapid Research Response

UNICEF Innocenti is mobilizing a rapid research response in line with UNICEF’s global response to the COVID-19 crisis. The initiatives we’ve begun will provide the broad range of evidence needed to inform our work to scale up rapid assessment, develop urgent mitigating strategies in programming and advocacy, and preparation of interventions to respond to the medium and longer-term consequences of the COVID-19 crisis. The research projects cover a rapid review of evidence, education analysis, and social and economic policies.
