Examining harmful impacts of the COVID‐19 pandemic and school closures on parents and carers in the United Kingdom: a rapid review

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, school closures meant that for many households, home and school environments became intertwined. Parents and carers found themselves taking on the role as de-facto educators, as well as balancing working from home and caring for additional members of the household. Understanding the full extent of the effects incurred by parents and carers during school closures is vital to identifying and supporting vulnerable families. This rapid review aimed to appraise the available evidence on the potential effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on UK parents and carers. Searches for academic literature were conducted using Proquest Central, Scopus, and Google Scholar between 21st and 28th April 2021 using search terms describing “parents and carers”, “COVID-19” and the “UK”. Additional literature was identified on relevant parents and carers' organisations websites including charity reports.

Can machine learning models predict maternal and newborn healthcare providers' perception of safety during the COVID-19 pandemic? A cross-sectional study of a global online survey

Maternal and newborn healthcare providers are essential professional groups vulnerable to physical and psychological risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. This study uses machine learning algorithms to create a predictive tool for maternal and newborn healthcare providers’ perception of being safe in the workplace globally during the pandemic. It used data collected between 24 March and 5 July 2020 through a global online survey of maternal and newborn healthcare providers. The questionnaire was available in 12 languages. To predict healthcare providers’ perception of safety in the workplace, it used features collected in the questionnaire, in addition to publicly available national economic and COVID-19-related factors.

Children's "best Interest" locked up: on the situation of children's rights during the COVID-19 responses

The constitution of the WHO as well as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child both emphasise the unique position of children, the significance of healthy development and the obligation of public and private actors to always consider the best interest of the child. There is – at least in the case of Germany – no evidence that this obligation has been fulfilled in due manner during the COVID-19 reactions. On the other hand, there is clear evidence from different parts of the world that the closure of schools and all places of social encounter has deeply harmed the social, emotional and even intellectual development of many children. The children’s rights therefore have not been safeguarded during the corona-reaction-crisis. The article argues that this disregard of the position of children has its roots in public health’s utilitarian perspective on the health of peoples instead of individuals. In order to safeguard the rights of children in public health operations, the procedures already foreseen by the UN Convention and its implementing regulations to take into account the best interest of the child must be truly implemented in the future.
The relationship of parents' parenting patterns with online game addiction during the Covid-19 pandemic at SMK Mekanika Cirebon

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, the activities of parents and children have changed, many parents who experience stress due to their business experiencing a decrease in income and even going out of business, while some have to work at home using the WFH (Work From Home) system set by other companies and institutions. . Stress conditions experienced by parents have a relationship with the parenting style given by parents to their children, there is a statistically significant relationship between the stress conditions of parents and the parenting style of parents for their children The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between parenting and online game addiction at SMK Mekanika Cirebon. The method used is descriptive quantitative with survey research. Data collection by questionnaire. 220 Participants were taken by proportional random sampling. Data analysis with simple regression test method with the help of SPSS.


Non-suicidal self-injury in adolescence: the role of pre-existing vulnerabilities and COVID-19-related stress

For many adolescents, the COVID-19 pandemic represents a uniquely challenging period, and concerns have been raised about whether COVID-19-related stress may increase the risk for self-injurious behaviors among adolescents. This study examined the impact of pre-existing vulnerabilities on the occurrence and frequency of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) through COVID-19-related stress, and whether the impact of COVID-19-related stress on NSSI was buffered by the perceived social support during the pandemic. Participants were 1061 adolescents (52.40% females; Mage = 15.49 years, SD = 0.76) from a two-wave longitudinal study, which included assessments before the COVID-19 onset and one year later the declaration of the pandemic.


Student and school characteristics associated with COVID-19-related learning decline among middle and high school students in K-12 schools

COVID-19-disrupted schools, including shifts to virtual learning which may have impacted academic progress. This study assessed characteristics associated with changes in academic grades (before and during the pandemic) for different learning modalities for US students ages 13-19. Students (N = 2152) completed a web survey on school-related experiences during the 2020-2021 school year. County social vulnerability and SARS-CoV-2 transmission data were merged with survey data. Multivariable logistic regression analysis for grade change was conducted with student and school characteristics for each learning modality, controlling for community characteristics.

Emotional status, stress and insomnia in pediatric healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic

Facing the critical situation of the pandemic, healthcare professionals are directly involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with COVID-19 in the front line and they are at risk of developing psychological distress and other mental health symptoms. Here it is aimed to determine where the child clinic staff stand in terms of the psychological burden of the disease. A hundred and fifty-one eligible physicians and nurses working in the Clinic of Pediatric, University of Health Sciences Turkey, İzmir Tepecik Education and Research Hospital who answered a web-based questionnaire between 10-20 June 2020 were included in the study. Socio-demographic questions, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) were used to evaluate the psychological determinants of the healthcare workers.

Variation in infants’ home environment is implicated in their cognitive and psycho-social development. The pandemic has intensified variations in home environments through exacerbating socioeconomic inequalities, and increasing psychological stressors for some families. This study investigates the effects of parental (predominantly maternal) mental health, enriching activities and screen use on 280 24- to 52-month-olds’ executive functions, internalising and externalising problems, and pro-social behaviour; with socioeconomic status and social support as contextual factors.
Cross-cultural equivalence of parental ratings of child difficulties during the pandemic: findings from a six-site study

The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) has been shown to be invariant across informants, developmental stage and settings, but tests of cross-cultural equivalence are limited to adolescents' self-reports. The COVID-19 pandemic makes this gap particularly pertinent, given the need to understand whether distinct government approaches (e.g., school closures) are uniquely associated with variability in children's psychosocial outcomes and the reliance on parents' ratings for young children. Within a Confirmatory Factor Analysis framework, we tested the cross-cultural measurement invariance of the SDQ across six countries: Australia, China, Italy, Sweden, the United Kingdom and USA, using a sample of 1761 parents of 3- to 8-year-olds (M = 5.76, SD = 1.09).

The impact of COVID-19 lockdown on sleep patterns, emotions, and behaviors of children and adolescents in Taiwan

The lockdown in May 2021 was the first and only lockdown implemented in Taiwan during the COVID-19 pandemic. The epidemic in Taiwan has been maintained under relatively better control and this study aimed to examine the impact of the lockdown on sleep and emotional and behavior disturbances in children and adolescents in Taiwan. Participants over 6 years old were recruited retrospectively from a cohort study, and their parents completed questionnaires including the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), the Swanson, Nolan and Pelham-IV Teacher and Parent Rating Scale (SNAP-IV), and the function assessment. A total of 217 children and adolescents whose parents completed questionnaires during both the lockdown period and the pre-lockdown period were included.

Support for mask use as a COVID-19 public health measure among a large sample of Canadian secondary school students

Youth voice has been largely absent from deliberations regarding public health measures intended to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission, despite being one of the populations most impacted by school-based policies. To inform public health strategies and messages, this study examined the level of student support of mask use in public spaces and school mask requirements, as well as factors associated with students’ perspectives. It used cross-sectional survey data from 42,767 adolescents attending 133 Canadian secondary schools that participated in the COMPASS study during the 2020/2021 school year. Multinomial regression models assessed support for i) wearing a mask in indoor public spaces and ii) schools requiring students to wear masks, in association with COVID-19 knowledge, concerns, and perceived risk.

Interpersonal communication between teachers and students through science practicum activities in increasing the learning motivation of public high school students in Depok City during the COVID-19 pandemic

The Depok City Government is an area that decided to implement teaching and learning activities with an online learning system to break the chain of covid-19 spread. During the Covid-19 pandemic, innovative online learning media, especially science subjects, were used to increase student learning motivation while studying at home. Science practicum activities are one of media that can help students' understanding, for this reason, the creativity of science teachers is needed to continue to carry out simple practicum activities at home. The purpose of this study is to find out and analyze interpersonal communication between teachers and students through science practicum activities in increasing the learning motivation of state high school students in Depok City during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, using the Paradigm of Constructivism, the theory of interpersonal communication used is the Theory of S-O-R (Stimulus-Organism-Response) and the Theory of Symbolic Interactionism. Data collection is carried out through documentation, interviews, observation, and triangulation.
Self-medication patterns during a pandemic: a qualitative study on Romanian mothers' beliefs toward self-treatment of their children

Self-medication represents a significant healthcare and health policy issue worldwide, both in developed and underdeveloped countries. Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic is considered a relevant context that could subtly trigger self-medication behavior because of limited access to health care services and the threat of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. While the previous research conducted with quantitative methodologies reported a dramatically increased rate of self-medication around the world, qualitative inquiries on the subjective experience with self-medicine remain scarce in medical and related fields of study. For this purpose, a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews was undertaken to better understand how Romanian mothers (n = 18) applied self-treatment with their children by avoiding medical advice during the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 & Children: Rapid Research Response

UNICEF Innocenti is mobilizing a rapid research response in line with UNICEF’s global response to the COVID-19 crisis. The initiatives we’ve begun will provide the broad range of evidence needed to inform our work to scale up rapid assessment, develop urgent mitigating strategies in programming and advocacy, and preparation of interventions to respond to the medium and longer-term consequences of the COVID-19 crisis. The research projects cover a rapid review of evidence, education analysis, and social and economic policies.
