The UNICEF Innocenti Youth Engagement and Strategy team, in collaboration with the Dubai Future Forum, is excited to introduce a two-hour workshop at the Museum of the Future in 2023.
Children and young people have been a driving force for change throughout history. It makes sense therefore that they should also be deeply involved in imagining the future – their future, our future, the future of the planet, and that their absence from foresight and decision making spaces greatly hinders our capacity to anticipate how the world is changing. Regardless, children and young people have a right to be part of any conversation about the future they will inherit, and to develop their talents and abilities to the full in order to have agency in a rapidly changing world and bring about the futures they wish for.
It is with this sentiment in mind that we are proud to launch UNICEF's brand-new Youth Foresight Playbook. This case study-based toolkit, inspired by UNICEF Innocenti's Youth Foresight Fellowship program launched in 2022 with funding from the Government of Finland through UN Global Pulse, was created for foresight practitioners, youth-focused and youth-led organisations, as well as think tanks and UN agencies, to meaningfully engage youth in foresight, and in decision making spaces using foresight.
An intergenerational team, comprising both UNICEF staff and our first cohort of Youth Foresight Fellows, will guide the session. After an introduction from UNICEF Innocenti Director Bo Viktor Nylund, they will present the Playbook, highlighting its origins, key messages and potential uses.
This introduction will set the stage for an interactive, action-oriented unconference segment where participants will have the opportunity to propose current or upcoming foresight projects that might benefit from meaningful youth engagement. Subsequently, groups will vote with their feet, choosing the projects they wish to work on before using the Playbook to reimagine them with a youth-centric approach.
The objectives of the workshop are to see the Playbook used, to build youth engagement capacities, to find tangible opportunities for meaningful youth engagement during and after the Dubai Future Forum, and to inspire young people – and those who work with young people – to not only embrace foresight methods and tools but to make them accessible, thereby fostering a collaborative environment where youth are engaged as equal partners in shaping all our futures.
