Statistics and Stories: Qualitative Research Fills in the Blanks

Qualitative researchers explore the social and biographical circumstances underlying statistical trends to access a deeper understanding of motivations, values and experiences. They investigate the why and how of events and decision making, which can deepen the value of the what, where, and when questions posed by quantitative surveys. And when qualitative research is integrated with quantitative surveys, the two approaches offer a fulsome understanding of the dynamics at play in the lives of young people. In keeping with GLORI’s aims, the two together can help point the way to policies and programmes that can sustainably improve child well-being.
