Hiwot Mekonen

Social and Economic Policy Researcher

Hiwot is studying the effectiveness of cash transfer programs as climate shock coping strategies among adolescents in sub-Saharan African countries for the UNICEF Office of Research—innocenti. Her research interests revolve around understanding the dissemination of knowledge and innovations, human and social capital formation, evaluating the effectiveness of various innovations and programs, and using insights from behavioral sciences to understand economic decisions. In terms of methodology, she employs both experimental and quasi-experimental approaches. Hiwot holds a Ph.D. in Development Economics from the UNU-MERIT, School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University, the Netherlands.
