Innocenti Digest Changing a Harmful Social Convention: Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (Arabic version) Published: 2005 Innocenti Digest Every year, three million girls and women are subjected to genital mutilation/cutting, a dangerous and potentially life-threatening procedure that causes unspeakable pain and suffering. Not only is it practiced among communities in Africa and the Middle East, but also in immigrant communities throughout the world. Moreover, recent data reveal that it occurs on a much larger scale than previously thought. It continues to be one of the most persistent, pervasive and silently endured human rights violations. This Innocenti Digest examines the prevalence of FGM/C and its social dynamics. It provides an explanation as to why the practice persists and of the elements necessary for its abandonment. It also takes stock of progress to date, identifies what works and what does not, and provides direction regarding the most successful strategies to promote the abandonment of FGM/C. Combining concrete field experience with tested academic theory, the Digest provides a practical tool to bring about positive change for girls and women. + - Cite this publication | No. of pages: 54 | Thematic area: Gender Issues, Rights of the Child | Tags: children's rights, gender discrimination, gender issues, genital mutilation, violence against women, women's rights × COPY BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION 2005 Changing a Harmful Social Convention: Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (Arabic version). , pp. 54.
+ - Cite this publication | No. of pages: 54 | Thematic area: Gender Issues, Rights of the Child | Tags: gender discrimination, gender issues, genital mutilation, violence against women × COPY BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION 2005 Cambiar una Convención Social Perjudicial: La Ablación o Mutilación Genital Femenina. , pp. 54.
Innocenti Digest Ensuring the rights of indigenous children AUTHOR(S) Michael Miller Published: 2004 Innocenti Digest Around the world, in rural and urban areas alike, indigenous chilldren frequently constitute one of the most disadvantaged groups, and their rights - including those to survival and development, to the highest standards of health, to education that respects their cultural identity, and to protection from abuse, violence and exploitation - are often compromised. At the same time, however, indigenous children possess very special resources: they are the custodians of a multitude of cultures, languages, beliefs and knowledge systems, each of which is a precious element of our collective heritage. As this Digest discusses, the most effective initiatives to promote the rights of indigenous children build upon these very elements. Such initiatives recognize the inherent strength of indigenous communities, families and children, respect their dignity and give them full voice in all matters that affect them. + - Cite this publication | No. of pages: 32 | Thematic area: Rights of the Child | Tags: child protection, children's rights, children's rights violation, indigenous children, right to adequate standard of living, right to care and protection, right to culture, right to health and health services, right to survival and development, rights of indigenous children × COPY BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION Michael Miller 2004 Ensuring the rights of indigenous children. , pp. 32.
+ - Cite this publication | No. of pages: 32 | Thematic area: Rights of the Child | Tags: child protection, children's rights, children's rights violation, ethnic groups, indigenous children, right to adequate standard of living, right to care and protection, right to culture, right to health and health services, right to survival and development, rights of indigenous children, violence × COPY BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION Michael Miller 2004 Garantir les droits des enfants autochtones. , pp. 32.
+ - Cite this publication | No. of pages: 32 | Thematic area: Child Protection, Minorities, Rights of the Child | Tags: child protection, children's rights, children's rights violation, indigenous children, right to adequate standard of living, right to care and protection, right to culture, right to health and health services, right to survival and development, rights of indigenous children × COPY BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION Michael Miller 2004 Asegurar los derechos de los niños indígenas. , pp. 32.
Innocenti Digest Poverty and Exclusion among Urban Children - Arabic version Published: 2003 Innocenti Digest The cities of the world are often regarded as hubs of wealth and privilege, but they are also home to hundreds of millions of children for whom poverty and exclusion are a daily reality. Some of these children live on the street; many more live in dangerous, insanitary housing which often lacks the most basic amenities, including clean water and satisfactory sanitation. These urban children rarely have access to adequate services, including schooling, or to safe areas for play and recreation. The imperative of economic survival can mean not only that parents are unable to dedicate sufficient time to childcare, but also that children themselves are forced to work, often in hazardous conditions. Yet all this need not be the case: this Digest examines the potential of good urban governance founded upon human rights principles to promote positive change for and with children. The key to eradicating urban poverty and exclusion lies in the development of child-friendly cities where children’s rights are made a priority in budgeting, planning and resource allocation and where children’s voices inform the democratic process. + - Cite this publication | No. of pages: 32 | Thematic area: Urban Child | Tags: child poverty, child protection, governance, poverty, street children, street children, urban children, urban communities × COPY BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION 2003 Poverty and Exclusion among Urban Children - Arabic version. , pp. 32.

+ - Cite this publication | No. of pages: 32 | Thematic area: Urban Child | Tags: child poverty, child protection, governance, poverty, street children, street children, urban children, urban communities | Publisher: IRC × COPY BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION 2003 L'infanzia urbana tra povertà ed esclusione sociale. , pp. 32.
Innocenti Digest Birth Registration: Right from the Start Published: 2002 Innocenti Digest This Digest looks at birth registration, a fundamental human right that opens the door to other rights, including education and health care, participation and protection. It explains why the births of more than 50 million babies go unregistered every year. In legal terms, these children do not exist and their right to an official name and nationality is denied. Their access to basic services may be severely jeopardised and they may find themselves more vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. The effects can last a lifetime, with the unregistered adult unable to vote, open a bank account or obtain a marriage licence. Non-registration also has serious implications for the State. Put simply, countries need to know how many people they have and how many there are likely to be in the future, in order to plan effectively. This Digest emphasizes the crucial importance of birth registration, explores the obstacles to universal registration and highlights the actions - including awareness raising, legislative changes, resource allocation and capacity building - that are needed to ensure the registration of every child. + - Cite this publication | No. of pages: 32 | Thematic area: Rights of the Child | Tags: birth registration, children's rights, children's rights violation, implementation of the crc, right to a name, right to preserve one's identity, right to registration of birth | Publisher: IRC × COPY BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION 2002 Birth Registration: Right from the Start. , pp. 32.
+ - Cite this publication | No. of pages: 32 | Thematic area: Rights of the Child | Tags: birth registration, children's rights, children's rights violation, convention on the rights of the child, demography, implementation of the crc, right to a name, right to preserve one's identity, right to registration of birth, social policy | Publisher: IRC × COPY BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION 2002 L'enregistrement à la naissance : un droit pour commencer. , pp. 32.
+ - Cite this publication | No. of pages: 32 | Thematic area: Rights of the Child | Tags: birth registration, children's rights, children's rights violation, convention on the rights of the child, demography, implementation of the crc, right to a name, right to preserve one's identity, right to registration of birth, social policy | Publisher: IRC × COPY BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION 2002 El registro de nacimiento: el derecho a tener derechos. , pp. 32.
Innocenti Digest Early Marriage: Child Spouses Published: 2001 Innocenti Digest This Digest focuses on early marriage - the marriage of children and young people under the age of 18 - from a human rights perspective. Research into early marriage has tended to concentrate on its impact on reproductive health, school drop-out and rising population figures, and there has been little examination of the practice as a human rights violation in itself. The Digest examines the scale of early marriage, its context, causes and its impact on every aspect of the lives of those affected - particularly young girls - and on wider society. It outlines strategies to help those who have been married at an early age, and for the prevention of early marriage through education, advocacy and alliance-building. The Digest concludes with a call for more rights-based research on an issue that has far-reaching consequences. + - Cite this publication | No. of pages: 28 | Thematic area: Gender Issues | Tags: child exploitation, children's rights, children's rights violation, early marriage, education, gender discrimination, gender issues, health, human rights violation, violence against women | Publisher: IRC × COPY BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION 2001 Early Marriage: Child Spouses. , pp. 28.
