Poverty and the safe transition to adulthood

This research initiative uses data generated from the Transfer Project to look specifically at the role of income, care-giver characteristics and other factors in enabling the safe transition of adolescents into adulthood. Adolescent outcomes to be investigated include risky sexual behaviour, alcohol and smoking behaviour, mental health, hope, aspirations, time preference, violence, cognition and subjective well-being. Focus countries are Kenya, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Key partners include UNICEF Country Offices, the regional office of East and Southern Africa, national implementing agencies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, American Institutes for Research, and the UN Food and Agricultural Organization.
